They say that Jazz often is love at first note – a love that will equally often last until death. While many remain loyal listeners, some people feel the need to grab an instrument and start playing after their first encounter with the music. After long years of practice, a few of them become very skilled. In order to achieve that, one cannot deny the importance of the most vital part of this particular discipline: improvisation. The music documentary Time to improvise by Tina Lešničar and Janez Stucin portrays eight Slovenian musicians, all between 21 and 35 years old, touring New York, Amsterdam and Vienna. The jazz musicians stand out not only on account of their talent and their ambition, but also for their endless pursuit of perfection and their imagination. Their main goal is to gain experience by touring abroad, and they even get to play with renowned American performers such as bass players Reggie Workman and Joe Sanders, drummers Doug Hammond, Nasheet Waits and Damion Reid and pianists Jason Moran and Vijay Iyer. All these young musicians are obviously in search of their place in their respective genres and, on their journey to reach this goal, have already become valuable assets to the scene, both at home and abroad. The documentary provides a captivating look into a fascinating world outside the mainstream. After the screening and a Q&A, two of the protagonists, accompanied by two more great musicians *), will play a one-hour concert based on own songs and improvisations, partly from their last records and partly from Time to Improvise.

*) Members: Igor Matković (trumpet), Jani Moder (guitar), Robert Jukić (double-bass), Vladimir Kostadinović (drums)

Welcome back!
Concert “The Best Of” Fanfara Transilvania

Sunday, 11th October, 9pm
1040 Vienna, Schwarzberg, Schwarzenbergplatz 10/1
Entry: 15€/12€

Miracles do happen! Last year we announced that the Austrian premiere of the Balkan Gypsy Brass group Fanfara Transilvania was to be the very last concert to take place in Vienna’s (now closed) Ost Club. The Romanian cult band’s music and the enthusiastic dancing of hundreds of attendees made the walls of the legendary club shake. As not everyone who wanted to be there last year got the chance, we invited Fanfara Transilvania to visit us again this year and perform their “Best-Of” program – and they accepted! Not only will the band play Balkan Gypsy Brass music at its finest, but they will also perform a number of songs from Emir Kusturica’s films, such as Bubamara, Messecina and Ederlezi. Where will they play? - At the new Schwarzberg, or in other words, at exactly the same location as the former Ost Club.

Fanfara Transilvania:  Somewhere in the mountains of Transylvania, there is a village named Cugir. There, not far from a weapons factory, the Balkan brass band Fanfara Transilvania, also known as Galans Band or Fanfare Galan, was founded. The band members are all brothers, cousins, godfathers and godchildren, and all inherited a love for their homeland’s traditional music from their fathers. They preserve a rich cultural heritage, which they also mix very skillfully with modern elements. This legendary cult band represents a special type of Romanian folk music, with very powerful and stirring playing, and vocals from Moldova and Transylvania. Their name also stands for the finest Balkan Gypsy brass, with entertainment at the highest level being guaranteed. The members of Fanfara Transilvania have an incredibly wide repertoire, accumulated through playing at weddings, funerals and all kinds of events in their home country, when they are not touring the rest of Europe.

*) Members: Nicolae Galan (flugelhorn), Mihai-Rusalin Galan (trumpet), Constantin Buruiana (trumpet), Constantin Galan (clarinet), Constantin Sabau (baritone horn), Cristinel Roman (baritone horn), Maricel Batista (baritone horn), Marius Dragomir (tuba), Vladut Magureanu (vocal percussion), Cornel Lupu (big drum)
