Feature Film Competition

The Feature Film Competition, curated by Poland’s best-known film critic Tomasz Raczek, will include eight films, among them István Szabó’s most recent work The Door (starring Helen Mirren and Martina Gedeck), Domestic by Adrian Sitaru, Circles by Srdan Golubović, Jin by Reha Erdem and In the Name of by Małgośka Szumowska.

LET'S CEE Curator Tomacz Raczek:

I am certain that the films which were selected to compete in this year’s LET’S CEE Film Competition will surprise both the audience and members of the jury. Central and Eastern European cinema has been developing at a breathtaking pace, not only concerning its means of expression; it is also increasingly – or even predominantly – becoming a form of “cinematic therapy”, touching the hearts of the people in the audience, healing their soul and spirit. The Serbian film “Circles”, “Jîn” from Turkey, as well as the Croatian film “Halima’s Path” can be seen as good examples, while the Polish film “In The Name Of” attempts to extract the most delicate and awkward aspects in the lives of religious believers trying to find the balance between religious modesty and the wish to live out their feelings freely, which has become so typical of modern man. The Czech film “In The Shadow” and the Slovakian production “The Confidant” demonstrate how socially sensitive aspects of life can be combined with genre film. At the same time, “Domestic” continues the ongoing search for a new cinematic language which has been shaping Romanian cinematography for several years. Last but not least, the Hungarian production “The Door” – directed by Istvan Szabo – reminds us what a tremendous impact an extraordinary acting can have on a film. I am confident that this year’s Film Competition will bring a huge dose of emotion and that it will be an aesthetic experience. Truly, the decision that the jury will have to make this year will be anything but easy.
