Innocent Sorcerers

Synopsis

Warsaw in 1960. The traces of the war are still to be seen. A new generation of young people are looking for their way and happiness. One of them is Bazyli. The young sports physician and jazz drummer is very popular amongst girls, although he deliberately manipulates them and usually is quickly bored by them. One evening though, his cynicism is put to the test when he meets the enigmatic Pelagia in a pub. The intelligent and opinionated woman immediately arouses his interest. They spend a night together talking for hours, getting on exceptionally well with each other but not daring to show their real feelings. Can their random flirt evolve to become something serious? Andrzej Wajda once said that Innocent Sorcerers might be his directing work he liked the least because he was too much seduced by the almost literary-theatrical central characters. The critics had a decidedly different opinion: “A sensibly traced love story that is remarkable for its dramatic character and portrayal of a love story,” says the Encyclopedia of International Film, The Telegraph calling it a work of “visually alluring and intellectually switched-on filmmaking”. In short, a feast for the heart, the eye and the spirit.
