Synopsis

The family Anghelescu assembles for dinner. The atmosphere is exuberant, and as usual, Victor, a widowed doctor, feels very comfortable as the family patriarch. But the seemingly cosy gathering turns when one of his sons accuses Victor of having denounced pregnant women who sought abortions during communist times, when this procedure was illegal. Everything gets even more heated, when the subject of the incestuous relationship of Victor’s twins comes up. Illegitimate is a film and stage performance at the same time. Alternating between the dramatic and the downright comic, the drama is almost a documentary, and abounds with tremendous intimacy. Director Adrian Sitaru shot each of his new masterpiece’s scenes only once. In this film, he not only broaches how different generations deal with each other and the handling of historic responsibility, but also revives two of the most crucial taboos of cinema: abortion and incest. It soon becomes crystal clear that some facets of love and rights to personal freedom can contradict social norms. Illegitimate does not judge, but rather leaves judgement to the audience, who will rapidly recognise that, when it comes to truth, nothing is carved in stone.
