Funeral Fest, Burial Lunch

Synopsis

In the spring of 1941, when Slovenia is occupied by Italy and Ljubljana becomes an Italian province, World War II has finally entered the carefree lives of two high school students, Niko and Popaj. The two friends decide to join the resistance. But this isn’t the only change in their lives: love also enters both of their lives, and for one and the same girl at that. When Niko must kill someone for the first time, he finds himself in an extreme chaos of emotions, forcing him to grow up. Despite premature assumptions, Funeral Fest, Burial Lunch is only on the surface a film about war and partisans. War, resistance and death may indeed be the key themes, but so are love and coming-of-age. In this third feature film of his, Matjaž Klopčič has adapted the novel by Beno Zupančič to the big screen, in which he has created an aesthetically pleasing, outstandlingly portrayed and until today an ever relevant and philosophical mixture of the central topics of life. It is by all means a moving coming-of-age-story and a gripping drama. One of the best Slovenian films ever – against the backdrop of an especially dark period of history.
