Synopsis

Just as the movie director Andrea Culková becomes pregnant with the third child, she gets diagnosed with diabetes. She is told to avoid consuming sugar, because it may damage her and her baby's health. To keep the baby safe Andrea changes her food habits. At the same time she decides to go on a journey across the world and research many questions related to  the «sweet poison» taking a closer look at the whole industry. What effects might be caused by sweeteners and harm other than diabetes done to the body? How do we eat and cook without sugar? Why is it so difficult to give it up? Is there something like a sugar mafia? Culková engages into discussion with doctors, gynaecologists in particular, scientists, and ordinary families who don’t use sugar in their diet. In the tradition of successful filmmakers such as Michael Moore, she adopts tenacity and persistence of a private detective in order to show the public the influence of those white crystals on health and also their total presence in every household. Even though the results are presented with a humorous touch, they are still quite shocking. Andrea Culková made a very personal and emotional documentary which leaves many points to consider and to think about, also encouraging critical thinking and concern of what to put in your shopping cart.
