The Romanian director won the price in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival with The Death of Lăzărescu. In Berlin, he received the Golden Bear for the best short film.

Cristi Puiu is one of Romania’s most acknowledged film directors. After having studied painting and directing in Geneva, he presented a very promising debut film in 2001 with Stuff and Dough. His second piece of work, the short film Cigarettes and Coffee, was even awarded a Silver Bear at the Berlinale Film Festival. But Puiu was also successful as a screenplay writer with, among others, Niki and Flo by Romanian directing legend Lucian Pintilie. Puiu’s final breakthrough, however, came in 2005 with The Death of Mr. Lăzărescu, a film hailed both by critics and the audience. The drama won the price in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, and Puiu himself was nominated for the European Film Award in the category of directors. The Death of Mr. Lăzărescu’s ironical face-off with Romania’s health system is regarded as the first milestone in Romania’s new wave cinema - and Cristi Puiu as its pioneer.
