Anti-War Movie Retrospective

2015, and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, will be marked with the screening of an anti-war film that recalls that end. Agnieszka Holland’s masterpiece Europa, Europa will be presented again, 25 years after its world premiere. The movie is based on the moving survival story Ich war Hitlerjunge Salomon (I Was Hitler Youth Salomon) by Sally Perel, who will be on hand to answer questions as part of the LET'S CEE School Cinema. Additionally, on 6th October at 7.30 pm, Mr Perel will speak about his life, with the publicist and historian Peter Huemer, in conjunction with Aktionsradius Wien (Gaußplatz 11, 1200 Vienna). Admission to this discussion is free. The series is complemented by two further films: Come And See, shot in the Soviet Union in 1987, and according to many critics the best war film ever made. Then there’s 1944, a thrilling drama from Estonia, which has been nominated for an ‘Oscar’ Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Sally Perel

Salomon "Sally" Perel was born in 1925 in Peine (Lower Saxony). In 1938, he emigrated with his family to Łódź. After the invasion of Poland by German troops, Perel fled to Russia with his brother, where he later fell into the hands of the German Armed Forces (Wehrmacht). With certain death in front of his eyes, he explained: "I am an ethnic German." And this way, Solomon Perel became Josef "Jupp" Perjell. The book I was Hitler Youth Salomon is Sally Perel’s autobiography. From a distance of more than forty years, he tried to reflect and evaluate the dramatic events of his early youth. Perel describes his ludicrous adventures and shows his thoughts and feelings openly, while describing his inner conflicts and the struggle with the Hitler youngster Jupp, which he had become. Today, Sally Perel sees as his main task to pass on his experience to young people. Readings and events with the contemporary witness Sally Perel are an experience that cannot be found in history books and that will draw the attention of both young and old generations.
