Synopsis

Article 18 is a documentary which tries to explain why Poland still hasn’t managed to pass a law on same-sex marriage. In spite of 25 years of freedom and democracy, gay and lesbian people still have to deal with discrimination, whilst politicians try to downplay their problem. As there is no way of legalising these relationships, let alone get married, barriers build up in everyday life. This is symbolic of a society which allegedly offers equal opportunities for everyone, but actually treats many members of it as second-class citizens. The title refers to article 18 of the Polish constitution which says that marriage is an institution which is to be protected by the state – only if it is a relationship between a man and a woman. To the opponents of the LGBT community, this gives a sufficient argument to deny homosexual couples the recognition of their relationships. Based on interviews with experts, activists and homosexual couples, this film questions common Polish stereotypes and myths about gays and lesbians. Moreover, this gives the opportunity to talk about Poland, the state of Polish democracy and public dialogue, and the role of the media.
