Synopsis

Over three consecutive decades, The High Sun tells the story of three love couples from two villages in Dalmatia that are separated by more than just a lake. A high level of mutual mistrust prevails in the region, and romantic relationships between people of different ethnic origins are not tolerated. And yet, they exist. In 1991, a young couple is affected by the madness of a pre-war sentiment involving extreme hostility, fear and chaos. Ten years later, the encounter between a young woman and a man from the enemy side is again ill-fated from the beginning, as the wounds of war have not yet healed. The third story is set almost in the present, that is, in 2011. A man meets his former girlfriend, whom he abandoned long ago. Is there any hope that unselfishness and love will eventually prevail over the horrors of nationalism? The fact that the couple in all three stories is portrayed by the same pair of actors may appear to be quite an unusual stylistic device. Yet it allows the plot lines to be linked up effectively. This year, the jury in Cannes, gave this thrilling and visually stunning drama the Un Certain Regard award.
