Synopsis

Anya, a highly successful, yet very withdrawn university student, gets into trouble because of a friend and suddenly finds herself on the run from the police. Since she is not only pretty but also looks very young, she manages to hide in an orphanage, where she meets Christine, an early-maturing orphaned girl, who wants to find the rest of her family. Christine seems to give Anya hope in her desperate situation, at least for the moment. Together the ill-matched couple embarks on a heartbreaking and unpredictable hitchhiking odyssey across Russia that often looks threatening to them. They are heading for Kazakhstan, the alleged home of Christine's grandmother. For both protagonists, the trip will finally become the turning-point in their lives. Ilmar Raag's latest film is actually based on a stage play. It is about mere surviving, about the necessity to grow up quickly, about family values and friendship... and about how much sense it makes to get involved with other people. In this international coproduction, the beautiful wide landscapes stand in contrast with the dynamic emotional interaction prevailing between the two leading characters. A moving drama that will stay with you long after the final credits have rolled.
