Documentaries in Competition

The Documentary Film Competition, supervised by Croatian-born filmmaker Rada Sesic who now lives in Utrecht, will feature six contributions.

LET'S CEE Curator Rada Šešić:

Attempting to determine common trends in the contemporary European documentary scene is a tricky proposition. However, in Central and Eastern European films – from the countries that qualify for the Let’s CEE festival competition – one could define a common denominator in how they deal with intimate, personal stories and family matters. An omnipresent angst of the uncertain future is reflected in many of them. They often tackle directly or indirectly the way how borders between EU and non-EU countries create unforeseen hurdles in the life of the common individual.

Each documentary in the programme was weighed according to many selection criteria, of which two were most important, namely the relevance and freshness of the story and how compelling it is, and secondly, the artistic originality and the inspirational scope of the cinematic language used to let a particular story come across. It is amazing how many new kinds of input one can discover within the discourse of such a widely practiced film genre as documentary cinema and how each filmmaker finds his or her own way to extract the extraordinary from everyday life, disregarding the commonplace, succeeding in touching the invisible and unexpected, enabling the beautiful magic of life to come to the surface.
